USA Today Election Coverage

My name is Nick and I am the New York Election Coordinator for USA Today.

I am reaching out today because we are currently trying to find stringers to go to county offices across the state and report election results to us throughout the evening on November 3rd. In other states in the primary election season, we have had luck reaching out to press and broadcaster associations to find reliable local reporters to work with on election night. We were hoping you could pass along this information to members and community partners throughout the state. Location: Many county offices are available; I will find the closest to you.

Date: November 3rd

Hours: 8:45pm (15 minutes before polls close) – final report of results

Pay: $125 for the evening.

Job Description:

USA Today Stringers are a valuable part of our election results collection operation. As a stringer, your main responsibility is to report results to USA Today via the web using your smartphone. In some cases, phone calls may be necessary instead. Results will be released by county election officials periodically, and stringers will upload the new results as quickly and accurately as possible after receiving the update. They will also remain on site to answer any questions USA Today may have about when or how results are being released. This position typically takes around 4 hours but could go longer, and stringers should be prepared to stay until the election official indicates that no more results will be released this evening, or until your coordinator dismisses you. There will be a short but mandatory training prior to election day that will cover how to report results, how to interact with officials, and how to get paid. Potential for becoming a regular election night stringer in your county is very high, so long as the job is done well.

Requirements: Smartphone, transportation, ability to quickly and accurately record results to report.

2027 NABJ-Wall Street Journal Internship

The goal of the NABJ-Wall Street Journal partnership is to identify and foster emerging talent and contribute to the professional growth and development of aspiring journalists through real-world experience, mentorship and structured training.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

The NABJ + Wall Street Journal internship is an opportunity for college juniors to work in our award-winning newsrooms, including New York, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Washington D.C. Graduate students enrolled in a degree program by the application deadline – October 30, 2026 – are also eligible to apply.

We are seeking self-starters who understand the needs of a sophisticated digital audience across multiple platforms and are able to work independently under deadline pressure. Commitment to high journalistic standards and excellent writing and reporting skills are required.

You don’t need to be an expert in business or finance to apply, but you do need to be curious and eager to learn. You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.

The paid internship program offers practical work experience and mentorship, plus a robust orientation and tailored training sessions. Interns are encouraged to pitch their own stories and projects and follow them through to completion with supervision and guidance from an editor.

Pay: $28.57 an hour (35 hours per week)
Timing: 10 weeks between June and August (in-person)
